hi, I have a son, 11, with ALD (a leukodystrophy I didnt know he had till he was diagnosed just 3 1/2 years ago. he did have a stem cell transplant but is disabled anyway because he was late getting diagnosed. we are looking for a grant for a van or one we can buy at a cheaper rate, or even a regular rate but would include a work van, pickup or car with it for extra transportation. thank you.

Comment on: Wheelchair ramp, van and accessible information

By Jackabug - on Jan 15, 2010

Contact your local Independent Living Center (ILC) -- they will be able to help you get a grant towards the cost of constructing a ramp or purchasing a pre-fab one. They may also be able to suggest providers or contractors for you to obtain quotes from.

It sounds like you need more help than just the ramp, though! There should be one or more organizations in your area dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence; in most states calling 211 (or using 211.org) can get you contact info for these types of organizations, as well as for ILC contact info, actually.

You should also talk to your doctor about your difficulties. It may be possible for you to receive CNA / personal aide / homemaker / companion services. In my state (Connecticut) and some others, there is a Personal Care Attendant Waiver program which both gets you the help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) your disability interferes with and, for many people, also makes you eligible for Medicaid! I am also on SSDI but not SSI (fortunately I'm past that ridiculous 2-year Medicare wait) and before getting on the PCA Waiver was in "spend-down" status for Medicaid, i.e. I had to pay over $3,000 in one year before I became eligible for Medicaid and even then it went away again at the end of the calendar year! But now that I'm on the Waiver program, I get 20+ hours a week help with errands, transportation, hands-on care & just about anything else I need, and I now have full Medicaid coverage to supplement my Medicare & cover most of the premiums. It can be hard to find info about these programs -- there are never as many waiting list slots as people who need the help, and some states don't have even a 'pilot' program yet -- but the ILC is a good place to start.

By the way, if like me you're within reasonable distance from two or more ILCs, don't hesitate to contact both for information & then decide which one (if any) you want to request actual services, like grant assistance for a ramp, from. There's often a significant variance in the helpfulness, professionalism etc. from one office to another.

BEST of luck to you, and stay strong!

Hello everyone, my name is Melissa and I am the sister of a wonderful cerebral palsey 14 year old little man. He is confined to his wheelchair and the bigger he gets the harder it is to get from place to place. Hes growing into a fine young gentleman and would love to be able to take him where ever the road takes us. But just going to walmart has become a true JOB! and if its raining FORGET it! Because by the time you unload and put together the wheelchair you need a change of clothes! If anyone knows of any grants I could apply for please let us know! Because we desperatly need a WHEELCHAIR VAN!! Thanks for taking the time to read!!!

My dad fell and broke his neck on November 29, 2007. He is now quadriplegic and requires a wheelchair. He desperately needs a wheelchair accessible van for transport to doctors appointments and things that of that nature. We are located in Virginia if that makes a difference. If anyone has any information that could help us it would greatly be appreciated. My email is ted_sparks@hotmail.com. Thanks and God Bless

Ms. DiStefano, please call me.  I'm not sure yet, but I may donate my present 2000-Econoline 250 van to an agency or deserving individual once I get my new one; which I hope to have sometime in the Spring of 2009.  It rides well and has around 110,000 miles right now.  My number is 251-510-2372-Regards, Mike

I am sorry to hear about you and Sara, it looks like you really need a good handicap van. I hope I am not too late whit my response, I hear you can find such vans on the market and they are a great deal of help for the owners. You should take a closer look.

Wheelchair ramp, van and accessible information

By nothomebychoice - on Sep 29, 2006

Hello,

I am caught in an interesting situation.  I do not qualify for SSI because I get SSDI.  I do not get medicaid because I don't qualify for SSI.  I will not get medicare for another year (2 year waiting period).  My disability was caused by domestic violence, and I can not work.   I was able to obtain a manual wheelchair from a local medical supply company that was going out of business and was giving away their used chairs.  My challenge is that I need a wheelchair ramp built at my home so that I don't have to crawl up the stairs any longer.  I also need a vehicle that can handle my wheelchair better than my VW.   Right now I have to ask people in the parking lot to get my chair out for me and to put it back.  Sometimes I have to wait a long time to get anyone to help.  I am unable to pay all of my bills, let alone the new added expenses that have arose.  I was able to get help with a divorce, so he is totally out of the picture.  If anyone out there can help, or know of someone that can or of a website or information that I can use, I really appreciate the help.   kathy   nothomebychoice@yahoo.com

Comment on: wheelchair accessible van

By Dona DiStefano - on Jan 18, 2006

My name is Dona DiStefano and I am writing about my husband Robert DiStefano. We are 27 years old and my husband has been disabled since birth. He was born with a disability called Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. He is unable to feel from his knees down, and is wheelchair bound. In June of 2004 he had to have his right leg amputated to about mid-calf due to an infection that was in the foot going into the bone. He healed shortly after but because he is unable to walk when he transfers back and forth from his wheelchair to the car or to the steps to go up stairs on his behind it drags on the floor. Because of this he has a wound on his leg that has been there again since March of this year (2005) He was recently in the hospital for three weeks, during which time for 8 days he was on a ventilator. While on the ventilator he had 4 grand mal seizures. Being has he was in the hospital for so long laying on his back he has no upper body strength to transfer himself from the hospital bed we have downstairs in his mother's living to his wheelchair. He has to have assistance, and in order to go back and forth to doctor's appointments we have to borrow our friends van who is also disabled. It has a ramp so that he can roll up into the van without ever having to transfer. He will be going back into the hospital next week for a skin grafting on the leg which means he definitely will not be able to transfer into our car any longer. We are paying on 2002 nissian sentra and it is very low to the ground. If he transfers into or out of it the leg drags on the floor. Being married and him being on social security I can only make a 1,700 dollars a month in order for him to keep his medical insurance, but he only gets about 100.00 a month from the social security administration some months depending on what I made. The most is just over 200.00. If there is any way that you would be able to help us get a wheelchair acessible van I would greatly appreciate it. This way he doesn't feel like he is isolated in his house unable to go out with friends or out with his family for functions outside of the house. Thank you for your time and consideration.

My husband and I have custody of our three granddaughters, ages 10, 8, & 5.   I am now disabled due to osteoarthritis throughout my body.  Sara our 10 yr. old is also disabled due to arthrogryposis at birth.  We are in desperate need of a wheelchair accessible van, so that I can get Sara around to different places.  Sara is very intelligent, and is often selected for different school functions or events.  I have no way of getting her around in her wheelchair.  Our income has become very limited, due to my disibility.  Please help!
